Cllr Thelma Abbott
I am a mother and grandmother with two daughters and four grandsons. All of my family except one live within Leicestershire
I was born in Derbyshire, educated in Nottinghamshire and went to University in Leicestershire. I began my teaching career in Nottinghamshire and moved into Leicestershire after I had married.
I enjoyed teaching, taught in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and in multi-cultural schools within Leicester City. I became a Headteacher in a City school where, apart from education, I learnt about many important issues such as health and safety, equal opportunities, community support, youth development, diversity, the development of a cohesive environment both inside school and within the school grounds. My understanding and knowledge grew as did a pleasant school environment that improved lifestyles and provided an enjoyable, broad learning experience.
After twenty years of headship, I began to work for Leicestershire County Council, leading a range of courses for governors. I also worked with schools before and after OFSTED inspections.
In 1995 I joined Glenfield Parish Council. After several years, I became the Chairman for five years promoting a key objective – to champion opportunities for all young people including young women and the disabled.. So many matters that are pursued are linked to the range of issues I grew to understand as a Headteacher.
I have been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) for many years, attending their function and lectures on a regular basis.
From 2007- 2011, I became a carer for a loved one with dementia, joining CLASP to increase my knowledge and gain an understanding about helpful things that would improve the situation. I found courses and team discussions invaluable.
I am a member of the local U3A and enjoy being involved. I play golf for relaxation and enjoy reading books and pottering in the garden.
I am the Chairman of the Community Committee which arranges events pertinent to residents' lifestyles, to provide important local and global occasions and is determined to help make Glenfield a happy, all-inclusive village.
